Duplicating Shortcuts
Renaming of a shortcut created by an application installation program will often
cause the uninstall to fail. The following is a simple method for creating duplicate
shortcuts using names that work better with SmartStartMenu.
Create a folder named "SmartStartMenu" in a scanned folder. If you have not changed the defaults, this new folder can be on your desktop or under your "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Start Menu" folder. Click on the 'Start' menu and find the item you want to duplicated. Right-click on the item and "Drag 'n' Drop" it to the newly created folder. When dropped, select "Copy" from the pop-up menu. Rename the new shortcut to the desired name. Refresh SmartStartMenu by using Alt-R while SmartStartMenu has the focus.
Example: Right-click, drag and drop "Start \ All Programs \Microsoft Office \
Microsoft Office Word 2003" to the new folder and rename the new shortcut to "mword".
Note: This method works best with sub-string matching off.

Building Paths
When typing path into SmartStartMenu you can save some typing by pressing the end key ('End') and then the backslash key ('\') when the desired parent folder is in the edit box. Doing so quickly lists the next level of sub-items. Subsequenlty typing the first few charecters of the next path element will often list it in the edit box allowing you to repeat the process.

Supporting Favorites
Use the Settings application add your 'favorites' folder to the scan list. Usually
the folder is something like 'C:\Documents and Settings\Favorites'.
