Using The Toolbar
The toolbar is the heart of SmartStartMenu. After showing the toolbar all you have to do is type the first few characters of the name of the program that you want to run and see what happens. Things will get pretty obvious at the point. Following are some details that can make using SmartStartMenu even better so read on.
Showing the Toolbar
Right-button click within the clock area of your taskbar Select the 'Toolbars' sub-menu Select the 'SmartStartMenu' menu item If the 'SmartStartMenu' menu item is not present and you just finished installing try again in 5 seconds. It can take the taskbar a moment to update the list of toolbars.
Using the Toolbar
If your taskbar is 'unlocked' you can resize the SmartStartMenu toolbar to display
more information. You can also drag the toolbar to the top of the screen to get the
maximum display area available. Both operations start with grabbing the "gripper" on the toolbar and then moving the cursor to the location on the desktop that you want the toolbar.
To use the tool you click in the edit control and type the first couple of letters of
the name of the 'Start' menu shortcut that you would like to run. For instance to run 'Calculator' on my machine I type "ca" and then press the enter key.
To ease finding something like Microsoft Word I created a new shortcut on the 'Start' menu by copying the "Microsoft Office Word 2003" shortcut to a shortcut just named "Word 2003". Now I just type "wo" in the SmartStartMenu and then press the enter key to start Microsoft Word. Besides the names of items on your 'Start' menu you can also type a path such as "c:", or the name of a program such as "mspaint", or a URL such as "www.planetharrington.com", or a command such as "cmd".
